les pratiquants (nombre, habitude…) et leur organisation ;

Many of the EU fish stocks are at historically low levels as they undergo
direct and indirect pressures through human activities (e.g. fisheries) and
environmental pressures. Fisheries management strategies balancing the
biological factors of the stocks against the socio-economic requirements of
the fishing sector are now a priority. In addition, the Reform of Control -
in the Commission's agenda for 2008 - is aimed at an improved control
capacity and sustainable management of the resource, and involves the
assessment of the costs and benefits of control strategies.
The FISHREG action of the Maritime Affairs Unit aims to support the Common
Fisheries Policy (CFP) through basic and applied research. The successful
candidate is expected to enhance the group's research profile with hands-on
work and peer-reviewed publications in:
a) the impact assessment of fisheries management decisions through
bio-economic modelling
b) research in the way spatial information can be utilized more effectively
for fisheries management and control
c) developing models for assessing the economic costs and benefits of
control measures
d) socio-economic impact assessments related to EU fisheries
e) research on the effective implementation of the future Data Collection
Framework (DCR) and the associated data calls
Candidates should hold a Ph.D. or have at least five years of research
experience in the field of fisheries economics or bio-economic modelling.
Knowledge of statistics (time series analysis, data mining and
visualisation) and modelling is required. Hands-on experience in
bio-economic modelling and the processing of socio-economic data is
essential. Programming experience in R, MATLAB and SQL is required. Good
knowledge of EU policies, legislation and programmes in the area of
fisheries is an advantage, as is a good knowledge of the English language.
